A Quick Overview
Surrounded by mountains, Sierra Vista (Spanish for "Mountain View") is located in SouthEastern Arizona 30 miles south of Interstate 10. The city's name describes its location and, at an elevation of 4,623', the city boasts spectacular views of the Mule, Dragoon, Whetstone and Huachuca Mountains. With an average maximum temperature of 75 degrees and a minimum of 50 degrees, the town enjoys 3 gentle seasons... summers can be hot with 90+ degree temperatures not uncommon. As the population nears 40,000, Sierra Vista is one of the fastest growing communities in Arizona and is the business and cultural center of Cochise County.
There is little doubt that Sierra Vista would not exist if it were not for the Ft. Huachuca Army Post. The Post was annexed by the city in 1972, making Sierra Vista, at over 83,000 acres, one of the largest cities by area in Arizona. Ft. Huachuca is the largest employer in southern Arizona
Sierra Vista was incorporated in 1956, so being fairly new, it's one of the most modern and vibrant cities in the southwest. The city is governed by a mayor and six council members with everyday operations in the hands of a professional city manager. Both Fire and Police Departments have won awards for outstanding public service. The City Parks and Leisure Services Department operates numerous parks, athletic fields, and an Olympic size public swimming pool. A modern community center coordinates senior citizen and cultural programs. The city also maintains a modern public library.
The Sierra Vista Regional Health Care Center is a modern hospital serving the communities needs along with medical professionals of all major specialties.
Sierra Vista has 6 elementary schools, 2 middle schools a high school and numerous private schools for children of all grades. Higher education is available thru The University of Arizona Sierra Vista Campus, Cochise Community College, Western International University and Chapman University.
Sierra Vista is the shopping center for Cochise county and parts of northern Mexico. An indoor shopping mall and several shopping plazas thrive and major retailers such as J.C. Penny, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target and Sears are represented along with branches of major Arizona banks. There are three well stocked super markets, many pharmacies and scores of smaller specialty shops and stores. Both fine dining and fast food restaurants are available throughout the area. Two multi screen movie theaters provides first run movies. Local media include cable television, local AM and FM radio stations, a daily and a weekly newspaper and many sources for local internet access. Many low cost long distance telephone services are available in the area and can be found elsewhere on this website.

Hummingbird Capitol of the United States is another name for Sierra Vista. Bird watchers from all over the world flock to nearby Ramsey Canyon Preserve, Garden Canyon and other local canyons to observe and photograph the fourteen species of hummingbirds and hundreds of other birds that pass thru and live in the area.
